SUMMARY

The Speech and Language Pathologist prevents, assesses, diagnoses, and treats speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.  The Pathologist also ensures educational relevance of eligibility and goal selection, provides contributions to curriculum, contributes to the language and literacy in the classrooms for qualified and at-risk students, and provides culturally competent services.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Counsels and advocates for students and families
  • Evaluates, re-evaluates, and identifies students with speech and language impairments
  • Identifies individuals at risk for swallowing or feeding disorders
  • Educates staff relative to bilingualism and dialectal differences between students
  • Analyzes environments and demands of curriculum as related to comprehension of oral and written expression as critical elements of language
  • Implements and provides therapeutic intervention to students using a variety of service delivery options and researched based interventions
  • Consults with teachers to match students learning style and teaching style; designs and recommends modifications to the curriculum to benefit students with special needs
  • Acts as a team member in the development and implementation of an IEP
  • Attends staff and faculty meetings; attends ETR and IEP meetings
  • Completes compliance paperwork for agencies, District, and State
  • Completed Medicaid billing requirements and daily logs
  • Write students’ evaluation reports
  • Communicates and coordinates with outside agencies and other related service staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Completion of Clinical Fellowship Year
  • Hold a valid Ohio Board License for Speech-Language Pathology
  • Hold a valid Speech-Language Pathology license with the Ohio Department of Education
  • Must be sensitive to cultural and linguistic differences.
  • Must have knowledge of standardized norm-referenced tests and criterion-referenced tests.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and treat individuals at risk for articulation and/or phonological disorders.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and manage individuals at risk for resonance, voice, and/or fluency disorders.
  • Ability to recognize social language disorders and variations.

 

 

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS 

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, stoop, and climb stairs
  • Occasionally lift and/or move lightweight items up to 40 lbs.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • Work is performed in a general school setting
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  • Work may be subject to frequent interruptions
  • Some assignments are subject to completion within strict timelines
  • Frequent travel for meetings, professional development activities, and work assignments
